Project Description

The Wildlife Conservation Film Festival and DDB New York joined together to create a campaign called “Endangered Love”, designed to raise funds and awareness of the risk of extinction that certain species, like pandas, rhinos, sloths and gorillas, are facing today.

The thought behind the campaign is that the most effective way to avoid extinction is for animals to procreate – in other words, to have sex. The subject is approached in a very humorous way, through a series of delicate hand-drawn illustrations depicting he aforementioned creatures engaged in Kama Sutra-style sexual positions. The artwork is featured in an array of merchandise, from t-shirts to skateboards, including a set of books titled “Panda Sutra”, “Gorilla Sutra” and so on. The proceeds are redirected to wildlife conservation groups around the world.

As part of the initiative, Lobo was invited to direct and produce an animated music video spoofing the Lonely Island hit song “I Just Had Sex”, with singing pandas celebrating their procreative feats – all in the name of perpetuating the species, of course. The 1 minute-plus film was made with a mix of 2D and 3D animation, involving a team of over 20 artists, with a handmade, painterly finish that adds a deceptively naïve feel in contrast with the sexy content of the lyrics and the campaign in general.
